Originally from Palatka, Florida, Denise has made the Big Island her home for over 20 years. She is a retired Army Intelligence Officer and former teacher. Having attended Law School at the University of Florida, Denise also obtained a Masters in Psychology. Aside from her illustrious real estate career, she is also co-owner of Uncle Miles’ Catering Service and Uncle Miles Kitchens, operators of the snack bar inside Hilo International Airport. In her contagious humor she claims to be able to was pots as fast as she sells homes!
Four times nominated as Realtor of the Year and selected as co-REALTOR® of the Year in 2009, she consistently ranked a top sales agent at her previous firm, Century 21. Her aptitude, dedication and knowledge of Big Island real estate quickly placed her as the top-producing agent with Prudential Orchid Isle Properties as soon as she joined in 2000. Denise has not only been the Top Producer for 9 consecutive years, she consistently ranks amonth the top 3% of Prudential’s’ 50,000 agents nation-wide. In between her long hours of real estate, Denise is a committed runner. She also devotes many hours to assisting various Veterans’ organizations, has served as a Director on the East Hawaii Cultural Center Council and is one of the original diectors still serving Hawaii Island veterans on Hawaii Island Veteran's Memorial, Inc. She is a sitting Director with the Hawaii Island REALTORS®.
Her zest for life is also held by her husband Miles and the 6 children and 5 grandchildren they share. One of them is her able assistant and partner, Mealoha Kraus, REALTOR®-Salesperson.
Mealoha Kraus
Mealoha is a REALTOR® that knows her community! Part of an established island family, Mealoha grew up on the island. She attended high school in Florida but returned home her senior year to graduate from Waiakea High School and continued her education at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, where she graduated with honors. She often comments on how well her undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences and Marine Science can be applied to the daily task of helping people find their perfect place in paradise. While originally planning to teach, Mealoha quickly found the challenges and rewards of real estate fit her to a tee! A licensed REALTOR® and graduate of the inaugural class of the National Association of REALTORS® Leadership Academy, Mealoha is driven to be the best agent she can be for her clients and community. An active and award-winning agent in her own right, Mealoha works in partnership with her mother, Denise Nakanishi, and they are both perennial top producers at Prudential Orchid Isle Properties. Mealoha and her mother were voted REALTORS® of the Year by the Hawaii Island Board of REALTORS® (HIBR) in 2009. REALTOR® of the Year is the highest honor that the local professional organization bestows upon their members. Only three teams have ever received this honor. Mealoha has served as director, secretary, vice-president and is currently serving as HIBR’s President-Elect. She is soon to be installed as the 2012 President.
In addition to her busy professional life as a REALTOR®, Mealoha is a mother of two young children who attend Ke Kula ‘O Nawaihiokalani’opu Hawaiian-language immersion school, where she has been an active volunteer for years. Because everything is done in the native tongue, speaking Hawaiian is an unusual prerequisite to volunteering. She serves as Secretary of the Hilo Skateplaza Coalition, whose goal is to build a safe place for children to skateboard and roller skate in Hilo. She has served the community many years, and in several capacities, including as the Vice-President for Recycle Hawaii. Her real passion outside of work is Roller Derby. The teamwork, sportsmanship and discipline of skating with the Paradise Roller Girls is a perfect outlet for this fierce competitor. Whether it’s scuba diving, camping with the family or spending the day with her husband on a jet ski on Hilo Bay, Mealoha loves being surrounded by the ocean. For this busy lady, her primary professional goal is to use her local knowledge to help others find their perfect place in paradise. Her current career goal is to earn Prudential’s Rising Star Award before she turns 35. With the special insight, knowledge, drive and experience, there is no doubt that she’ll get there!
